What is Metadata? 

Metadata summarizes the information about data, this makes the finding and working with the data set much easier. Metadata is the data about data. 

Distinct types of Metadata exist that include structural metadata, descriptive metadata, reference metadata, administrative metadata, legal metadata, and statistical metadata. The list is not exclusive and depends on the type of data and its usage.
